So you’re ready to add a new dog or cat to your home. Well you’re in the right place!
To begin, you can view our animals available for adoption on line but there’s nothing like the real thing. We welcome you to come to our shelter and spend some time getting to know our dogs and cats in person.
We’ll ask you some questions about your lifestyle and animals that you currently own so that we can lead you to a pet that’s the right match for you. After spending time with the animal here, filling out an adoption application will put that animal on hold for you while we process your application. We do not do “same day” adoptions but will process your application as quickly as possible.
To process your adoption we’ll need to speak with your landlord to get permission if you rent, so be sure to bring their contact information with you. If you’ve had pets before we’ll call your vet for a reference. We’ll also ask you to provide us with contact information for the people you designate as being able to provide personal references for you.
If you are looking to adopt a dog from us and already have one or more dogs at home, we will schedule you to bring your current dog(s) in to meet the new one at the shelter after we have approved your adoption application.
Keep in mind that you may not find the perfect pet for you on your first visit. Take your time, the right dog for you is out there and our Adoption Staff wants to help you find it. There are always animals waiting to come into our shelter, and they do as soon as we send a lucky dog or cat home. You can always fill out a “Special Request Card” with your preference and leave it with one of our Adoption Counselors but be sure to keep an eye on our website and visit weekly or check in with us by calling us at (518) 828-6044 or by email at info@cghs.org.
Adoption Fees
The fees for adopting animals at The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA help us provide medical care, food, and shelter the animals in our care. We never euthanize animals for space constraints, adoptable dogs and cats stay with us as long as it takes to find their forever homes.
