Dog and Cat Food Drive for CGHS/SPCA

Pictured, April and Ron Ordway dropped off a trunkload of dog and cat food and supplies for the benefit of the homeless animals at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. The donations were collected by the MC Smith Intermediate School on Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson, which normally collects only for a food pantry. This year, April suggested they add the Shelter’s wish list to the drive.

Proceeds from Yard Sale Benefits CGHS/SPCA

In an act of humanitarian kindness, Althea and Eudora Brennan of Ghent, NY held a yard sale and collected $30.58 for the benefit of the sheltered animals at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA in Hudson. Animal Art Exhibit to Benefit CGHS/SPCA

The Columbia County Council on the Arts will be hosting an Animal Art exhibit from January 21 through March 10, 2012 at the CCCA Gallery, located at 209 Warren Street in Hudson, NY.

The Opening Reception will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The Juror for the exhibit will be Ron Perez, President and CEO of the Columbia Greene Humane Society /SPCA. This special show will benefit the animals at the Shelter, which does wonderful work protecting and finding homes for animals in our area. A portion of the proceeds of art sales will be donated to CGHS/SPCA.

Homes Needed for Puppy Mill Dogs

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA has assisted the ASPCA with a puppy mill raid based in Garland County, Arkansas. The breeding dogs, some with tiny puppies, had been living in sheds outside a mobile home. ASPCA investigators found 175 dogs and puppies suffering from eye, dental, and skin diseases, fleas, mites, and heartworm. Many of the puppies and dogs were found to be emaciated. The owners were arrested and are awaiting trial.

Currently, CGHS/SPCA has six Boston Terriers and two Dachshunds ranging from one to seven years of age. “These dogs were used primarily for breeding and are in desperate need of homes that can offer patience and compassion,” said Ron Perez, President/Investigator of CGHS/SPCA.

Blue Plate Annual Post-Holiday Party to Benefit the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA

On Saturday, January 7, 2012 the staff of the Blue Plate Restaurant, located at 1 Kinderhook Street in Chatham, NY, will be hosting their 9th Annual Post-Holiday Party to benefit the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. In the last five years, this event has raised more than forty thousand dollars for CGHS/SPCA, which serves nearly one thousand unwanted, abandoned, lost and/or abused animals every year.

All the food is donated by the staff and friends of the Blue Plate.

The cost is $25 per person, more if you can afford it or less if you can’t. The food is buffet style, and will be accompanied by music from local bands, Belly Dancers, and a cash bar. In addition, there will be a silent auction and raffles. The benefit runs from 5 p.m. until “whenever.”

“This year we’re continuing our tradition of throwing a great party to benefit a really great cause. The Humane Society really needs new facilities, so please come out and have a fun evening with us!” said Marcia Curran and Colleen Carpenter-Rice, co-organizers of the event. Academy Recruits Deliver Donations from Food Drive

Recruits from Zone 5, Regional Law Enforcement Academy hosted a food drive to benefit the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. During the month of November, the Zone 5 recruits collected nearly one ton of cat and dog food to benefit the Shelter’s Food Bank, a free service to the public.

In conjunction with the Columbia Greene Humane Society benefiting sheltered animals Columbia County Council of the Arts is accepting all mediums and styles depicting animals in artwork. Juried by Ron Perez, President and CEO of CGHS/SPCA. A percentage of the proceeds of sales will be donated to Columbia-Greene Human Society/SPCA.

Deadline for Submissions: Friday, December 16, 2011 by 5:00 pm

Artists may submit up to 5 images in jpeg format. Current CCCA members are eligible to submit entries for free. Non-members must pay a non-refundable submission fee of $25.00 that may be applied towards membership if application for membership is received within 30 days of the $25 check date. Check must be payable to CCCA, 209 Warren St., Hudson, NY 12534. Check must be received by the due date.

Artists who are selected will be notified within two weeks of the submission deadline.

What makes “Happy” happy?

Recently having celebrated her 7th birthday, Amelia VanWormer of Valatie, NY decided to request donations for the resident companion animals at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. The result was a huge contribution of toys, treats, and food, welcomed by all. Pictured, Amelia took time out for an appropriately enjoyable moment with CGHS/SPCA resident “Happy.” All our thanks, Amelia!

Youngster’s Birthday Benefits CGHS

Nine year-old Jacquie Fitzmaurice has a different take on birthday gifts: giving rather than receiving. For her 9th birthday earlier this month, Jacquie requested donations of cash and pet-related goods to benefit the homeless animals at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. She wound up collecting an amazing $165 at the fesitivities, along with a trunkload of food and treats. Pictured is Jacquie, handing off the torch of compassion to CGHS/SPCA President and CEO Ron Perez Jr. and playful shelter resident Sally, a Beagle pup.

“Our thanks go out to Jacquie, and we wish her the best; no reward is too great for such a selfless act of humanitarianism,” complimented Ron Perez of young Jacquie. “The world can always use more people with hearts like hers.”

A Wonderful Annual Tradition

Erik and Jennifer Nicholsen enjoy an annual tradition of celebrating their wedding anniversary by making a trip and donating to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. Now on their eighth year of marriage, Erik and Jennifer show that helping homeless animals with a gift of kindness is a perfect way to share their happiness with those less fortunate. Thanks to Erik and Jennifer from the Staff, the Board of Directors, and all of the animals at CGHS/SPCA!
