Girl Scout Troop Collects Donations

Girl Scout Troop 1819 from Athens, NY visited the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA with a car full of cat and dog food, treats, and other supplies, as well as cash donations. In total, they donated $170 worth of collected donations. The girls pictured are Sarah, Rachael, Maddy, Meagan, Lexi, Emmy, and Mary Kate, with CGHS/SPCA Adoption Counselor Jessica Farkas and Cooper, who is currently up for adoption.

Columbia County PROS Drive Benefits CGHS/SPCA

The Columbia County PROS program of the Mental Health Association held a supply and money drive as well as a raffle for the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. They collected $110.85, as well as several bags of toys, treats, and food. Pictured are Ramona, Jennifer, and Thomas with some of the donations they collected.

CGHS/SPCA Receives Generous Gift from Taconic Hills High School

The Taconic Hills High School chooses an organization to donate to each year using the money that’s leftover from their Extracurricular Account. For the year 2012, they had $800 left over, and decided to donate it to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA! Attached is a picture of the 2013 Class Treasurer Heather Decker with Diego, a Beagle mix currently up for adoption, after presenting us with the contribution. Thanks from CGHS/SPCA to all who made that gift possible!

Hair Cut-A-Thon to help animals

On March 2, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. the D’Vine Reflexions Salon at 209 Jefferson Heights in Catskill, NY will be hosting a Cut-A-Thon to benefit the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA and the more than one thousand animals that they serve each year. The donation is $10 per haircut; no need for an appointment, walk-ins are welcome. 100% of all proceeds will be donated to CGHS/SPCA. For more information, please call (518) 943-2116.

Blue Plate Fundraiser to be held January 12th

On Saturday, January 12, 2013, the staff of the Blue Plate Restaurant, located at 1 Kinderhook Street in Chatham, NY, will be hosting their 10th Annual Post-Holiday Party to benefit the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. Since this event began, it has raised more than fifty-five thousand dollars for CGHS/SPCA, which serves nearly one thousand unwanted, abandoned, lost and/or abused animals every year.

All the food is donated by the staff and friends of the Blue Plate.

The cost is $25 per person, more if you can afford it or less if you can’t. The food is buffet style, and will be accompanied by belly dancers, music from local bands, and a cash bar. In addition, there will be a silent auction and raffles. The benefit runs from 5 p.m. until “whenever.”

“This year we’re continuing our tradition of a great party to benefit a really great cause. The Humane Society really needs new facilities, so please come out and have a fun evening with us!” said Marcia Curran and Colleen Carpenter-Rice, co-organizers. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office presented the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA with a plaque of appreciation for their participation in the “New Leash on Life” program hosted by the Sheriff’s Office. The New Leash on Life program provides inmates in the Columbia County jail the opportunity to learn basic dog obedience skills, then in turn, train homeless dogs provided by the Humane Society. The skills that the dogs are taught by the inmates make the dogs more adoptable to potential homes. Charlene Marchand, professional Dog Trainer and Board Chairperson of the CGHS/SPCA provides weekly lessons to the inmates and dogs. The dogs stay with and are cared for by the inmates until the six-week training program is concluded.

Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA receives $20,000 grant

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA received a twenty thousand dollar grant for their new shelter Building Fund. The Bruce G. Geary Foundation of Staten Island granted CGHS/SPCA the grant in November for the construction of the new Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA.

“The $20,000 grant from the Bruce G. Geary Foundation will be a great boost towards our new shelter, and we deeply appreciate the support from the Foundation’s Board of Directors,” said Ron Perez, President of CGHS/SPCA.

Funds from WTEN Channel 10’s Pet Connection with Steve Caporizzo as well as close friends and long-time supporters of CGHS/SPCA Art and Roz Brown will be sponsoring all pet adoptions at the shelter beginning Tuesday, December 4, 2012. All animal adoptions will be free to approved homes until funds are exhausted or until December 31, 2012. All adopted animals are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated and tested for disease, de-wormed, and have been given a 24Hr pet identification microchip. Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA Receives $45,000 Grant

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA received a $45,000 grant for their new shelter building fund. Planning and Art Resources for Communities (PARC) Foundation granted CGHS/SPCA the grant in October for the construction of the new Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA.

“The $45,000 grant from the PARC Foundation will be a great boost toward our new Shelter, and we deeply appreciate the Foundation’s generosity,” said Ron Perez, President of CGHS/SPCA.

Meet the New Leash on Life Dogs

The New Leash on Life dogs will be at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA on Saturday, December 1 from 11:30 a.m. until 2p.m. People can meet and apply to adopt the dogs currently in the program. The New Leash program is offered through the office of David W. Harrison, Jr., Sheriff of Columbia County. The program is held at the Columbia County Jail, where inmates are taught basic dog obedience by Charlene Marchand, professional Dog Trainer and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of CGHS/SPCA. In turn, the inmates continually rehearse basic dog obedience with homeless dogs, making them more adoptable and increasing their chances of obtaining a permanent home. The dogs are supplied by CGHS/SPCA and live with the inmates during the six week program, which offers around the clock care and crucial training for when they are adopted.

These dogs, in particular, are especially in need of a caring home. Two of the three dogs in the program were rescued by the NYPD and the ASPCA downstate. Laila and Amber were found locked in crates in a Bronx home. The basement of the six story building was used for dog fighting, and more than fifty five dogs were recovered from the basement. CGHS/SPCA stepped up to help with the placement of the adoptable dogs, and elected to place two of them in the New Leash on Life program to better suit them for their new home. Both Laila and Amber are Bull Terrier mixes; Laila is approximately 3 years old and Amber is about 2 years old. Both dogs are very sweet and gentle. Simba is a 1 year old Siberian Husky that is very friendly and active.

All three of the dogs in the program need homes, and the adopters will receive one free training session with Charlene Marchand to help them adjust to their new environment. In addition, all three dogs’ adoption fees are sponsored by CGHS/SPCA members Art and Roz Brown, so there will be no cost for the dogs to be placed into approved homes.
