Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA Launches New Youth Program

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA launched its new Animal Ambassadors Youth Program on Saturday, May 5^th at the Hudson Children’s Book Festival. “Children are always asking us how they can help the animals,” Volunteer Coordinator Becky Stowe explained. “The minimum age for volunteers at the shelter is 18, but this new program gives children under 18 a way to contribute to the well-being of the animals by being their ‘Ambassadors.’” Animal Ambassadors can be individuals or groups, such as Scout Troops, 4-H groups, or school clubs. Animal Ambassadors help the animals at the shelter by organizing Wish List Drives, Food Drives for the Community Food Bank, or raising money through activities like bake sales, collecting bottles and cans, or placing donation jars. Animal Ambassadors speak up for the animals by spreading the word about the importance of adoption.

Animal Ambassadors receive a kit with tips for putting on an event and ideas for events, a photograph and biography of an animal to represent, handouts on Adoption, Pet Emergency Preparedness, and Animal Do’s and Don’ts, an Animal Ambassadors ID card, and a scheduled tour of the shelter for a chance to meet the animals and learn more about their care.

Animal Ambassadors need their parents’ signed permission to participate. Groups need signed permission from the adult leader/advisor.

3rd Annual Dairy Queen Benefit and Food Drive

The 3^rd Annual Benefit For the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA will be held by Dairy Queen, 2319 Route 66 in Ghent, NY on Saturday, May 12^th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Partial proceeds from every purchase will benefit CGHS/SPCA. Cat and dog items will be sold, as well as some great gifts for Mother’s Day.

In addition, employees of Livingston Hills Nursing & Rehabilitation Center will be hosting an animal food collection table to support the CGHS/SPCA Food Bank. The Food Bank assists hundreds of local families by supplying their pets with food. The ultimate goal of this program is to help keep families and pets together, especially during these tough economic times. All cat and dog food is welcome and can be dropped off at the Livingston Hills donation table at DQ.

4-H Active and Able “Have-A-Heart” Fundraiser Benefits CGHS/SPCA

On February 11th, the 4-H Active and Able held their 4th annual in front of Walmart of Greenport to benefit the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. On Saturday, April 21st, the group made a visit to the Shelter to enjoy a visit with the animals…and to drop off a check from the fundraiser in the amount of $950. CGHS/SPCA Welcomes New Volunteer Coordinator

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA would like to welcome Becky Stowe as our new Volunteer Coordinator. Becky has been volunteering at CGHS/SPCA since 2007, and has a background in civic non-profit organizations. She has a certificate in Animals and Human Health from the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work, and is in the Animal Behavior and Conservation program at Hunter College (NYC). Becky designed, implemented and supervised a collaborative volunteer program with CGHS/SPCA and the Mental Health Association of Columbia Greene Counties, and is especially interested in developing other collaborative projects within the community. She has studied Obedience and Tracking with syndicated columnist and dog trainer Charlene Marchand, with whom she also trained for the Canine Good Citizen certificate and Therapy Dog International certification. Her three dogs, all CGHS alumni, are trained Therapy Dogs; additionally, both Blaise and Merlin are certified Canine Good Citizens, and Blaise has his Rally Novice title.

CGHS/SPCA is currently seeking volunteers who want to make a commitment and a difference in animals’ lives. Our animals have been abandoned, neglected, and/or have been victims of cruelty, and our staff and volunteers work very hard to both make the animals’ lives better as well as find them their forever homes.

“Volunteers introduce these animals to love, compassion, and dignity, and we welcome all who want to make this commitment,” states Becky. “We need help in all areas, including dog walking and socializing, cat grooming and socializing, kennel help, office help, and grounds and maintenance. We ask that all on-site volunteers be over 18 and commit to at least two hours a week. We also have two new programs in the works: a youth program called Animal Ambassadors, and a Humane Education program. It’s hard work, but the joy in knowing that you’re making a difference is priceless.”

Ducommun Inc Donates to CGHS/SPCA

Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA Announces April 20th as Neuter Day

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA announces Neuter Day, sponsored by the ASPCA.

The neutering clinic will be held on Friday, April 20. The cost is $10 per cat which includes the neuter, rabies and distemper vaccines. This is for MALE cats only. Space is limited.

Grant Announcements

The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA has received $17,000 in grants from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The ASPCA awarded CGHS/SPCA three grants to support their work on behalf of animals: $10,000 as a Response Partner for assisting the ASPCA with large scale cruelty interventions and natural disaster relief; $3,000 for medical needs of animals that were victims of cruelty; and $4,000 to assist CGHS/SPCA’s low-cost cat spay/neuter program. The low-cost feline spay/neuter program has spayed or neutered more 13,000 cats since its inception in 2003. Dog and Cat Food Drive for CGHS/SPCA

Pictured, April and Ron Ordway dropped off a trunkload of dog and cat food and supplies for the benefit of the homeless animals at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. The donations were collected by the MC Smith Intermediate School on Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson, which normally collects only for a food pantry. This year, April suggested they add the Shelter’s wish list to the drive.

In an act of humanitarian kindness, Althea and Eudora Brennan of Ghent, NY held a yard sale and collected $30.58 for the benefit of the sheltered animals at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA in Hudson. Animal Art Exhibit to Benefit CGHS/SPCA

The Columbia County Council on the Arts will be hosting an Animal Art exhibit from January 21 through March 10, 2012 at the CCCA Gallery, located at 209 Warren Street in Hudson, NY.

The Opening Reception will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The Juror for the exhibit will be Ron Perez, President and CEO of the Columbia Greene Humane Society /SPCA. This special show will benefit the animals at the Shelter, which does wonderful work protecting and finding homes for animals in our area. A portion of the proceeds of art sales will be donated to CGHS/SPCA.
